* Off to the Cincinnati Woodcarving Show

I expect I’ll soon be adding a photo at the beginning of this post.  It will be of our newest class project, the 1/2 sz Great Horned Owl. At this moment, it’s in June’s hands at the paint-table and “rounding third”.  In a few hours, I’ll be able to take the paint-finished bird from her and affix it to it’s base, using epoxy.  Allowing a few hours for the epoxy to set, I’ll then re-drill through the base-branch and into the bird.  A dowel will be glued and inserted to give permanent strength to the connection. I expect to enhance the base’s habitat by adding a few small branches including pine cones and needles,  soon after this show and prior to our next show which is at Sauder Village, Archbold, OH in a few weeks.  I just ran out of time for this show.   We’ll gather and pack our other carvings and exhibit gear into boxes and stow them carefully into the Nissan.  Late afternoon will find us setting-up our exhibit at the show-site and submitting a few carvings to the Judging Committee for the competition. That’s how it goes in our world.  This show is one of the five shows we have winnowed-down to doing each year.  This Great Horned Owl’s Walnut Base is only significant because it’s the very first one that I have personally turned on my wood-turning lathe. The lathe was gifted to me a few years ago by Carving-Buddy Jim Callahan. Please say hello if you see us at the show tomorrow (June’s birthday).

*Our New Class Schedule is Now Resolved!

Great Horned Owl

Our formerly scheduled Summer Class was to be the Little Green Heron and has been cancelled.  Our former Fall-Winter Class, the Great Horned Owl (1/2 Sz) has taken it’s place for the Summer Class with a new term, time & date.  It’ will run for 12 weeks starting at:  9 a.m. on Saturday, July 24th. The normal e-letter of notice & enrollment will be sent to this list around 30 days prior. It will be our last class-offered for this year.

*1998 Saw-whet Owls #3 & 4 Projects (Resumed) Page 1

I’ve just resurrected two more carving projects that have rested on the shelf in my shop since November 0f 1998; Pieces 107 & 108, Saw-whet Owls # 3 & 4.  In all, when these are finished, there’ll be five of them completed. #1 is in our son’s collection in KY.   Saw-whet Owl #5 was sold last year in the Cincinnati Show and #2 Sold years ago.  A close look at these two will show only the penciled marks all over both of them that I sketched-in today. It’s still too cold to be out in my shop, so I’m finding a few tasks to do in my easy-chair.  I’ve just heard from the “Paint department” that she wants me to finish-up on the half-dozen Shorebird stick decoys that I’m in the final stages on as we speak. This will be our 5th year to donate them to the Carving Shows whose banquets we choose to attend to be handed-out as a “Door-prize” to another carver.   Yes, I can attach their beaks whilst lounging away in my easy chair.  I hope to soon also resurrect my Red-tail Hawk #3 project. Getting there!  Keep an eye on the Owls Category or the Bill’s Special projects Category to track my progress on all of these “almost-left-behind” projects.
